The election context – why this cycle is different

Scope and timing

  • Polling day: Thursday 7 May 2026
  • Elections across 134 English councils, including:
    • All 32 London boroughs
    • Metropolitan districts
    • Unitary and district councils
    • Six local authority mayors
  • Elections for Senedd Cymru and Scottish Parliament

The pre-election period of heightened sensitivity for local elections in England is widely recognised as mid-April until polling day.

Political backdrop

National polling and recent local byelections point to multi-party competition becoming the norm, not the exception. Both Labour and the Conservatives are under pressure from:

  • Liberal Democrats in the South and South West
  • Greens in urban and progressive areas
  • Reform UK and independents in parts of the Midlands, North and some coastal communities

For housing associations, this means:

  • More councils operating without clear majorities
  • Slower, more negotiated decision-making, post‑election
  • Increased risk of being named or cited by candidates seeking visibility
